Jack Murtha was one of the developers of the original square dance program for use in schools. He was an educator and brought that experience to square dancing as a way to make it easy to introduce to non-dancers. This recording was a sample for a future project where Jack introduced a variety of easy squares and mixers using music produced by Bob Osgood. This comes from a cassette tape in the Bob Osgood library.

A name that may not be familiar to most dancers today but in his hey-day was a traveling caller, recording artist, and well respected leader among callers. Dick Weaver from Hawaii is featured through two separate recordings. The first from a dance called in Anaheim, California in 1963 and the second from one of his last Hawaii dances in 1978 (he retired from calling in 1979). Yes, this was Buddy Weaver's father.

This is a snapshot of one of square dancing in 1960 with one of the most popular callers at the time using a variety of basics along with a new call on almost every tip.

Dave was an incredible caller who brought square dancing to the international stage, through his many calling tours and the creation of the World Square Dance Convention. He was one of the founding fathers of CALLERLAB.

This episode we feature a vintage long-play album recorded by Les Gotcher. Released in 1970 on his own Black Mountain Label (copyright ownership by Buddy Weaver Music)
Les was the true pioneer of square dancing. His type of calling - blending parts of one routine with another routine - gained popularity with the dancers which then gave encouragement to other callers to adapt this style. Along with this new extemporaneous square dancing came a new style of calling. Les Gotcher's style of delivery from timing to cadence is the model of modern western square dance calling.

This episode we feature a vintage Blue Star Records long-play album recorded by Jerry Helt. Released in June 1970 as Blue Star 1016, "Both Sides Jerry Helt"
Jerry was a remarkable caller who at the time of this recording was popular on the travel calling circuit in addition to touring Universities teaching traditional squares with modern. A seasoned recording caller, who first entered the studio in the mid-1950s to record an album for Sear & Roebuck, Jerry holds the record for the most years recording.

Bob Fisk was certainly one of the most popular callers in modern western square dancing. His voice, style, and delivery electrified dancers every where he went. Todays podcast starts with three cuts from a dance in 1970 recorded in New Orleans, LA, while the remaining cuts are all singing calls from his California annual weekend. A combination of reel-to-reel tapes and DAT tapes were remastered for this program.
