Episode 359: Vintage MWSD Album Called By Jim Brower

This episode we feature a vintage Blue Star Records long-play album recorded by Jim Brower.   Released in July 1965 as Blue Star 1012, Super Challenge Dances.

All of the material was originally written by Florida caller, Gordon Blaum.  Known by many dancers and callers for his interesting use of square dance calls.  The recording caller is Jim Brower from Texas.  A first for Blue Star Records, this album is all patter calling; no singing calls.

Episode 358: Modern Western Square Dancing in 2016 - Andy Allemao and Buddy Weaver

Here is all the excitement of what square dancing is today.  A live Plus level (intermediate level) dance from Andy Allemao and Buddy Weaver.  Both callers reside in San Diego, California where the dance was recorded.  Both are recording artists for the Blue Star Music label.

This episode we feature a vintage Hi Hat Records long-play album recorded by Wayne West.  Released in mid-1960s as Hi Hat 7001 - "Modern Square Dances For The Student Dancer".

Cover notes state the dances were selected to offer the newer dancer good, challenging practice to better prepare for club level dancing.

Episode 356: Vintage MWSD in 1979 with Dave Taylor and Dick Bayer

A cassette tape recording of the 1979 Aloha State Convention held in Honolulu, Hawaii featuring the calling of Dave Taylor and Dick Bayer.

Many of today's fundamental calls were new to MWSD and are featured in the tips called by these two great callers.  Some of the most popular square dance music in 1979 is used for accompaniment.

Episode 355: Vintage MWSD - Blue Star Jubilee in 1964 (part two)

Wrapping up season four of the BWM podcast, we are featuring part two of the album, BS 1011 "Blue Star Jubilee".

As covered in episode #354, this is a continuation of the live dance held in the Sam Houston Coliseum in August 1964.  Nearly twelve hundred dancers are still on the floor, full of excitement while the Blue Star Band and calling staff is tuning up.

Episode 354: Vintage MWSD - Blue Star Jubilee in 1964

Buddy Weaver Music is the copyright owner of Blue Star Records.  Some episodes of this podcast will be presenting the Blue Star Records album collection.  Here is BS 1011 "Blue Star Jubilee".  

Released in November 1964, this was a three-record album set that captured the first ever gathering of live musicians who recorded for Blue Star Records, staff recording artists, and one-thousand one-hundred thirty-six dancers in the Sam Houston Coliseum for a one-night dance.

Episode 353: Vintage MWSD - Live Dance With Frank Lane, Marshall Flippo, and Dick Enderle

A reel-to-reel tape recording of a live dance held in Honolulu, Hawaii featuring the calling of Frank Lane, Marshall Flippo, and Dick Enderle.  Frank and Marshall were considered the top two callers in the country at the time while Dick was an up-and-coming traveling caller.

Nearly sixty-years of age hasn't affected the finished product in this episode. There is occasional distortion caused by either the amplifier output being too loud or the microphone input being set too high.  This doesn't take away from the excellence of these three callers.

Episode 349: Modern Western Square Dance Caller Singing Country Songs - Lee Schmidt

Unique to the MWSD activity is the callers/teachers who also have the talent to perform without the dance calls.  This episode features a beloved caller from Southern California, Lee Schmidt.

The album presented here is a compilation of his studio recordings from the eighties through the nineties with the musical accompaniment done by studio musicians from the Los Angeles area.   Lee was responsible for hundreds of dancers learning MWSD in addition to acting as a mentor to some of today's influential callers.  From the sixties until his retirement in 2012, he was a popular figure in the California square dance scene.

Episode 348: Modern Western Square Dancing - Called By Dick Houlton

The square dancer of today may not recognize the name, Dick Houlton, but he was a popular personality calling for thousands of dancers each month in his heyday.  His had a great influence over callers of the current generation.

Here is a live dance recording from 1990 of the late, great Dick Houlton.  Dancers of Mainstream and Plus will enjoy the calling while every caller should listen, over and over, to learn from a master caller.

Episode 345: Vintage MWSD in 1990 - Called by Johnnie Wykoff

Modern Western Square Dancing, slightly vintage as it was recorded in the nineties.  

Today's featured caller is Johnnie Wykoff.  From the early sixties until his passing in 2000, he was a popular caller who traveled throughout the U.S.  In the late eighties, he became the second owner/producer of Blue Star Records and all of the affiliate labels.  Over the years, Johnnie Wykoff recorded 169 singles, mostly on Blue Star, with today's episode highlighting one of his final albums.

Episode 342: The History Of Modern Western Square Dancing As Presented By Bob Osgood In 1979

A true pioneer in the MWSD activity, Bob Osgood, presented the history of our dance in 1979.  His presentation was captured on cassette and has been cleaned up in our studio for you.

Bob picks up the timeline post World War II, as Modern Western Square Dancing was pulling away from the folk dance groups of the time.  Rather than being part of an evening of folk dances where teaching was done every time the dance was presented, MWSD set the standard that dancers had to know the fundamental dances, which involved taking lessons for about six weeks.  In this way, every group get-together was dancing, rather than learning and re-learning the fundamentals.

Episode 341: Modern Western Square Dance Callers Singing Cowboy Songs - Hi Hat Pioneers Third Album

Unique to the MWSD world, here are square dance callers with the talent to sing "cowboy songs" - yes, singing without the calls.  The Hi Hat Pioneers featuring Ernie Kinney, Bronc Wise, Tom Perry, and Burlin Davis along with some fine studio musicians present the album, "Autumn On The Trail".

Released in 1984 on cassette tape, this is the third album for the group and highlights the tight harmonies and evolving sound.
